Bio

Steve is an artist based in New York. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wright State University, he continued to develop his skills working with stained glass, which profoundly influenced his later work.

He then had the unique opportunity of working on numerous Broadway shows and feature films as a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829, which included painting backdrops and sets. Through this experience, he developed an enduring fascination with the blending of the worlds of illusion and reality.

Since retiring from scenic painting, Steve has dedicated himself to his first love; painting. He founded the Outside the Line Collective, a collaborative art project that brings together talented individuals he had the honor of working with in the scenic arts. In his personal work he continues to explore the dynamic interplay between illusion and reality.

Statement

I seek to capture and highlight the pleasures of looking at the magical way light reveals our surroundings. Whether it’s light raking across a landscape, on a simplegroup of onions and garlic, glowing through a clementine, or casting shadows from broken eggshells, my work aims to call attention to these moments of wonder. However, the aim is not just about capturing a moment but seeks to create works that captivate the eye as visual objects, encouraging viewers to pause and consider discovering their own moments of wonder.

My artistic practice is rooted in the idea that our vision is made from a mosaic of moments, created by our eyes constant movement and shifting focus on different points. This ever-changing perception and how we interpret our environment is influenced by our thoughts and feelings, creating a rich tapestry of visual and emotional experiences. To reflect this relative nature of our perception, my work often incorporates contrasting textures and materials, and experiments with breaking traditional formats, often adding a three-dimensional quality, thus enhancing the interplay of reality and illusion.
